William Hill to Sponsor British Harness Racing

Online bookies, William Hill have taken a step away from their usual sponsorship portfolio to take their first step in British Harness Racing. The bookies have teamed up with the British Harness Racing Club to host the UK’s richest Harness Racing Series, The William Hill British Pacing Championship.

This one-of-a-kind Championship will offer a grand prize of £25,000, surpassing all other UK pacing contests prize money by a large amount. The race has already attracted considerable support from Harness Racers in both the UK and Ireland. Lord David Lipsey, President of the British Harness Racing Club said, “The partnership with William Hill is a great day for Harness racing. We are excited about the format and are thrilled to see the sport achieving main-stream recognition.”

The championship will be hosted at the Wolverhampton Racecourse throughout September 2008, and will consist of three qualifying contests (each for 12 runners) with the heats on Friday the 12th, Friday the 19th, and Saturday the 20th; top four from each day will advance to the finals. The finals will be held September 26th with the winner taking home £12,000.

The series will be broadcast live in UK and Irish betting shops via SIS, and also enjoyed by armchair viewers on Attheraces, an encore to the regular evening cards held at Wolverhampton. Entry to the championship will be by invitation and shall be extended to the best performing horses as judged by the panel with the top 36 acceptors split across the three heats.
