Texas Hold ‘Em Poker

Introduction

Out of all of the different poker variants normally played in the world today, Texas Hold ‘Em Poker is by far the most popular. It is a game that can be played in any betting structure and it is one of the easier modern poker variants to learn and apply. There is just the right amount of available versus unavailable information to make the game infinitely interesting to most of the people that play, and because poker is ultimately a social activity, that combination is very conducive to the popular nature that the game has taken on.

Game Play

Texas Hold ‘Em starts with each of the different players being dealt two cards face down. In each hand, a player is required to place a small blind and another is required to place a big blind, forced bets that rotate around the table and are placed before the dealing of those two face down cards takes place. The two face down cards are known as hole cards.

Once each player has received their hole cards, a round of betting commences in which players can call the big blind, fold their hand or raise the bet higher than the current amount of the big blind. If a player raises the bet, the action goes around again with each player having the same options against the raised amount.

Once the betting has been resolved in that round, three cards are dealt face up in the center of the table. These three cards are collectively known as the flop and represent community cards that every player can use in making their final poker hand. Once the flop has been dealt, another round of betting commences, starting with the player that was the small blind in the first round.

When that betting round has been completed, another card is then dealt face up in the center an next to the flop. The card is known as the turn and it precedes another round of betting. One more card is dealt in the same manner and is known as and called the river and after that card is dealt a final round of betting takes place. When the betting is complete, players turn over their hands and the player that can make the best five card poker hand from their two hole cards and the five community cards wins the hand and takes the pot.

History

The history of Texas Hold ‘Em Poker is a little vague, although most believe that it was created by the Texas road gamblers of the 1960s. For this reason, people like Amarillo Slim and Doyle Brunson are associated with this particular poker variant, although by Brunson’s own admission the game was practically dead until it was revived by the World Series of Poker and the eventual poker boom that resulted from it. Since that time, Texas Hold ‘Em Poker has become the most popular poker variant around and that is a trend that is expected to continue well into the next decade at least.

Online Casino Poker Room Gets a New Rep

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

The newly launched online poker room Aced.com has recently signed a contract with a winner from the WSOP of 2006 main event. Jamie Gold who took home the whopping first prize of 12 million dollars has signed the contract to represent the online casino in future tournaments and poker games on going for an unknown amount of time commencing this year.

The online poker room thinks that it will be great to put a now well known poker face to their online name in hopes of getting more recognition and making themselves a well known and frequently visited website on the list of poker sites around the world.

The controversy between many online casinos and sponsoring live game poker players is that many of them are based out of the US and since online gaming for money is not widely accepted in the US the online casinos and famous poker players sometimes find it difficult to work together.

Poker pros do not like to be put under any scrutiny and thus try to stay away from situations that would create this.

Currently the most popular online poker room that has a enough celebrity names to fill a poker room is Full Tilt poker with names such as Gus Hanson, Daniel Negreanu, Jennifer Harmon and that is just to name a few.

Sites do claim that having celebrity poker pro representation can ultimately increase their popularity and make them a much more profitable company in the long run but there is also a serious amount of money that goes into sponsoring these celebrities and keeping them on the payroll.

Canadian Wins 888’s World Poker Crown

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

It all went down at the Perlada Castle in Barcelona, Spain. After battling more than 2000 players to become a finalist in the $3 million guaranteed event, one man emerged as the winner of 888’s World Poker Crown.

The lucky winner, Jack Hinchey, a plumber from Toronto, Canada beat out fellow Canuck Michael Lawson for 1st place and the $1 million prize pot. Hinchey credits his granddaughter for inspiration throughout the tournament, turning her picture into a locket which he carried with him for luck. He stated that he would be giving notice at his plumbing job and paying for his granddaughters’ college tuition. Hinchey also stated that playing poker in Spain is “a lot better than being in a sewage pit!” Perhaps Hinchey’s turn of luck at poker will spawn a new career as well!

888’s World Poker Crown was broadcast over a live webcast (a first) and showed player’s hole cards as the action played out. In the final hand of the game Lawson held a pair of tens in the hole with Hinchey holding off suit KQ and the flop turning out K-J-6, all hearts. Lawson then went all in but Hinchey called with top pair, hit another king on the river after a blank turn to take home the huge pot!
