Australian Government Plans To Test Internet Filters For Online Gambling

October 28th, 2008

The Australian government is planning to test internet filters that will help prevent its citizens from accessing online casinos. Senator Steve Fielding, who unsurprisingly campaigns under the “Family First” banner, wants a compulsory policy forcing service providers to filter available sites.

Australian political observers say the government is under pressure from a vocal minority to require Internet Service Providers to block not only illegal material, such as child pornography, but anything of which they disapprove, such as online gambling sites, fetish sites, and whatever comes next.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy had promised that anyone unhappy with the censorship of the Internet could opt out of the filtering plan, but Conroy’s tune has changed. Now he says that there will be a two-tiered system. Adults wishing to drop out of the block against websites deemed dangerous to children could do so. But all Australians would be barred from sites thought dangerous to adults, which may contain Internet casinos as well as x-rated material featuring consenting adults.

The blacklist would be administered by the Australian Communications and Media Authority. This would mean that all Australians would be barred from sites thought dangerous to adults, which may contain Internet casinos.

A total of 91,139 winning Powerball tickets multiplied their prizes by 2 in the draw held on Saturday. Players were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you multiply your Powerball winnings from 2 to 5 times, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night’s multiplier. Argentina May Ban Online Gambling

October 21st, 2008

The people of Argentina may now face the wrath of the authorities regarding all forms of online gambling. The long-arm of the law has decided to put an end to all untaxed, unregistered online gambling activity. The latest unpopular bill to be proposed would effectively eliminate all online gambling. Councilor Luis Alberto Mauri wants all gambling Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block Argentineans from accessing their websites.

The ban may prove to be an unenviable challenge, given the country’s love of gambling activity. Lawmakers are quick to point out that they are all for regulated and taxable gambling activity, but not for the unregulated version. The targets of the new bill include: casino games, sports betting, poker and bingo. This is the only way for government to get a slice of the action, or, so they think.

The first Bill basically called all forms of online gambling illegal – although what qualifies as ‘online gambling’ is still uncertain. The second bill places the onus on ISPs to prohibit citizens from accessing online gambling sites as well as listing the aforementioned gambling activities as illegal.

Penalties for violation of these terms, if the bill is successful in passing, may result in fines or imprisonment. Now ISP’s will be in the position of blocking those sites that are online gambling websites. Amidst the controversy, citizens are calling for the widespread regulation of the industry, not it’s foreclosure.

IG Sport and Extrabet.com Launch First UK Gambling Commission Licensed Online Casino

October 20th, 2008

IG Sport (which is a spread betting firm) and sister fixed-odds operator extrabet.com have launched the first UK Gambling Commission licensed online casino powered by Chartwell Technology Inc. The casino went live last week and further expands the leisure offering from IG Group Holdings which includes sports spread betting, sports binary betting and fixed-odds sports betting.

The head of IG Sport and extrabet.com said, “We’re delighted to add Chartwell’s casino to our on-line sports betting portfolio and proud that we can boast the first UK Gambling Commission licensed online casino.” He added, “While both our fixed-odds and sports spread betting products remain strong, we also recognize the appetite for other modes of on-line gaming and so the benefits of increasing the offerings on our online platforms.”

In order to fulfill the IG Group’s requirements and commitment to regulatory leadership, Chartwell’s gaming system underwent a thorough certification process required by the UK regulatory authority that meets or exceeds gaming regulation anywhere in the world. This included both corporate and software certification to ensure maximum security and reporting functionality necessary for Chartwell to receive certification by the UK Gambling Commission under the new regime.

Google Reverses Ban on Online Gambling Ads

October 18th, 2008

The online search engine, Google has announced that it is partially reversing a policy against accepting gambling advertisements. The company announced that its decision over the last year to ban gaming ads will no longer be applicable to England, Scotland, and Wales.

The online search has said that its corporate motto is “Don’t be evil,” and made implications that the ban on gambling ads was part of a decision to protect the public from such other promotions as those for guns, prostitution, and so-called miracle cures. However, Google did not find gaming unethical until the company was forced to settle with the U.S. Department of Justice.

In that matter, it paid a fine for having accepted ads for online casinos. The removal of any future ads prevented Google from another legal headache with the U.S. government.

Google is presently facing a stock value that is off by almost fifty percent, largely due to declining revenues as advertising dollars are harder to come by in the struggling economy. Internet gambling advertisements represent a huge source of income.

The search engine has defended its policy change by saying it preferred to localize such decisions to comply with local customs and traditions. Online gambling is legal in Britain. Of course, if that logic were extended, then prostitution ads would be alright in parts of Nevada, and firearms could be pushed in Texas and Florida.

Google says only licensed gambling establishments will qualify as advertisers. Any ads accepted will be coded non-family-safe, which allows parental control software to block them.
